M. Lakes honors School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman with 'Key to the Town'

Miami-Dade School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman was awarded Miami Lakes highest honor, the “Key to the Town,” during the Town Council meeting on April 8. A 35-year resident of the town, Hantman was honored for her passion and dedication to education and for being a tireless advocate on behalf of all the public school within her District.

“Over the years, Chairwoman Hantman has proudly represented the School Board District 4’s area schools, including those in the Town of Miami Lakes,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “Her commitment to this community is greatly appreciated and we look forward to continue working with her and Miami-Dade Public Schools to provide our residents access to great educational opportunities.”

“It is my privilege to have been chosen by the Town of Miami Lakes to receive this prestigious honor,” said Hantman.

The Town Council unanimously declared April 8 as Perla Tabares Hantman Day in Miami Lakes and presented a Proclamation of her accomplishments.

Hantman was unanimously elected chair of the School Board in 1999 and became the first Hispanic woman to serve in the position. She has been a strong supporter of bilingual education and during her tenure, has successfuly brought new initiatives before the School Board for student safety and well-being.

Miami-Dade Public Schools’ Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho also attended the presentation at Miami Lakes Town Hall.
