Community Wednesday, February 19, 2014

The Town of Miami Lakes is honoring one of its founding councilmembers and a local trailblazer who helped guide the young city to success.

On Thursday, February 20, Mayor Wayne Slaton, councilmembers and residents will celebrate the renaming of the Mary Collins Community Center West building to honor the former three-term councilmember and the brainchild of most of the town’s committees that have made major  contributions that helped the town win several awards.

The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. at 15151 Montrose Road (Northwest 82 Avenue).

Before she became a Miami Lakes council member in 2001, Collins was a Miami-Dade County Commissioner. She served the Miami Lakes community for 11 years with a passion, focusing on programming and involvement of the town’s youth and elderly populations.

The community center at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West has undergone a full renovation which included the addition of one classroom. Programming will commence at the center in March.
