With the help of Scouts and Brownies from Troops 566, 902 and 529 and tree provider SFM Services, Inc. from Medley, members of the Miami Lakes town council planted a Cathedral Oak tree on April 25 in Park 60 in the Eagle Nest neighborhood.
The tree came with its own bird’s nest in the branches.
“They’re not just something aesthetic,” said Mayor Josh Dieguez. “... We all know the important role that they play ... in providing oxygen. The trees are our lungs. I think in Miami Lakes we understand that better than most.”
Members of the Miami Lakes Garden Club provided light bites and beverages for all to enjoy during the hot afternoon.
Tree City USA has recognized the town as a “tree city” for the past 18 years. To qualify, a municipality must commit to urban forestry, celebrate Arbor Day, maintain a tree board or department and have a tree ordinance.
