Miami Lakes Branch Library schedules events

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during August and early September:

For Children and Families:

Libraries Rock! Movies and Stories for Kids – Watch favorite movies with family and friends. Events made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, August 15 and 2, and September 5.

Baby and Me Group – A free 10-week series giving parents and caregivers an opportunity to develop close relationships with their infants, ages birth to 6 months. Space is limited and registration is required until the group is full. Participants must attend a minimum of 8 classes in a program sponsored by The Children’s Trust. Series runs at 10 a.m. weekly from Thursday, August 16, to Thursday October 18. Call 305-243-8425 or email familiesfirst@mami.edu for more information and to register.

Library Lego Club – Let imaginations run wild as participants build and create with LEGO blocks. All ages welcome at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 18. 

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 6.

For Teens:

D & D and More - Create your own adventure with this classic role-playing game or play chess, Shadow Hunters, Go and more. Best for ages 12 years and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, August 13, 20 and 27.

Teen Club Presents: Retro Gaming – Best for ages 12-18 years at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 28.

Teen Club Presents Rampage  PG-13 – A primatologist tries to rescue his albino gorilla after a genetic experiment goes away. Best for ages 12 and up. Made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4.   

For Adults: 

Book Discussion Group – This month’s selection is “The Nightingale” by Kristen Hannah at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21.

Introduction to Sahaja Meditation – Sahaja Meditation is a simple, time-honored technique that helps reduce stress and increase wellness. It brings focus and helps people become more centered and better balanced. Ages 10 years and up at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 18. 

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22.

Beginners Yoga – Library staff will lead a beginners’ Yoga class. Follow along to learn the Yoga poses at 3 p.m. on Saturday, August 25.

Libraries Card Sign Up – Share with friends and family how much you love the library and bring them to get their own card during Library Card Sign-up month. Join with screenings of the movie “The Incredibles” and other fun activities at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 1.

Purls of Wisdom – Learn basic knitting and stitching. Materials will be provided. Best for ages 18 years and up at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4.

Strum the Lute: Tai Chi for Beginners – Practice this ancient tradition and learn gentle movements to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Class is led by library staff. Best for ages 18 years and up at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 5.

Meditation – Meditation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 7.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
