Miami Lakes Library plans September activities

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs that are available for the public during September:

For Children and Families:

Movies and Stories for Kids – Watch favorite movies with family and friends. Movies being shown this month are “Monster’s University,” The B.F.G.,” and “The Book of Life.” Events made possible by the Town of Miami Lakes Education Advisory Board at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, September 12 and 19..

Baby and Me Group – A free 10-week series giving parents and caregivers an opportunity to develop close relationships with their infants, ages birth to 6 months. Space is limited and registration is required until the group is full. Participants must attend a minimum of 8 classes in a program sponsored by The Children’s Trust. Series runs at 10 a.m. weekly on Thursdays through  October 18. Call 305-243-8425 or email familiesfirst@mami.edu for more information and to register.

Library Lego Club – Let imaginations run wild as participants build and create with LEGO blocks. All ages welcome at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 15.

Talking is Teaching. Talk, Read, Sing for Toddlers – Stories, songs and activities for toddlers. Best for ages 18 months to 3 years old at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, September 6, 13, 20 and 27.

STEM Saturday – Make Your Own Ice Cream – Have fun making real ice cream while learning about chemistry. Best for ages 5-15 years old. STEM Saturday interactive lessons and hands-on activities are led by FIU undergraduate and medical students at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 8.

Paws to Read – This reading program aims to improve the literacy skills of children through the assistance of therapy dogs who serve as literacy mentors. Bring a book of your own choosing or choose one from the library’s collection at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 8.

Dragonball Z Fighter Fall Gaming Tournament – Compete for a chance to win a prize. Winners move on to the final rounds at the FandomFest on Saturday, November 10, at the Main Library. Open to ages 8-18 years at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 15.

Science in the City – Enjoy hands-on lessons infused with experiments to spark interest in STEM. Each new lesson builds upon the previous. Space is limited so contact branch to register. Best for ages 8-12 years at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 22.

Bridge Building Workshop – Learn how to engineer and test your own bridges using K’NEX!. Presented by Florida International University’s Engineers on Wheels. Space is limited to contact the branch to register. Best for ages 8-12 years at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 29.  

For Teens:

D & D and More - Create your own adventure with this classic role-playing game or play chess, Shadow Hunters, Magic, the Gathering and more. Best for ages 12 years and up at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, September 10, 17 and 24.

Teen Club – Play video games, watch anime, participate in STEAM activities and more. Best for ages 12 and up at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, September 11 and 25.

Sugar Skulls Makeup Workshop – Learn how to create beautiful and intricate designs traditionally seen in Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations in this hands-on workshop led by professional makeup artist Heather Green. All materials will be provided. Space is limited to contact branch to register. Best of ages 12 and up at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18.

For Adults: 

Purls of Wisdom – Learn basic knitting and stitching. Materials will be provided. Best for ages 18 and up at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays, September 11, 18 and 25.

Strum the Lute: Tai Chi for Beginners – Practice this ancient tradition and learn gentle movements to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Class is led by library staff. Best for ages 18 and up at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, September 12, 19 and 26.

Meditation – Join in mediation derived from Raja Yoga, a discipline that helps develop inner calm, clear thinking and personal well-being. Meets at 11 a.m. on Fridays, September 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Back to Work at 50+ – Job search assistance and training for adults ages 50 and over presented by the AARP Foundation at 1 p.m. on Thursday, September 13.

Book Discussion Group – This month’s selection is “All the Light We Can Not See” by Anthony Doerr at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18.

Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach Table - A member of Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart’s staff will be available to discuss federal issues and address any concerns a constituent may have with a federal agency, at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26.

Casi Vegan: Healthy Latin Recipes – Raquel Roque, author of Cocina Cubana, Cuban Kitchen and Cocina Latina, will host a bilingual, multicultural event incorporating trivia, recipe samples and healthy cooking tips. Bring a favorite Latin recipe to make sure it is healthy and sana! Scheduled at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 29.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
