On the final weekend of January at the University of Florida (UF), the Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High (HML) Model United Nations team proudly debated and engaged the world's most pressing issues.
Model UN (MUN), is an academic competition simulating the various committees of the actual United Nations. Students typically represent member nations as they navigate global problems through public speaking, resolution writing and most importantly, diplomacy.
GatorMUN, as the conference is popularly called, is Florida's premier high school MUN competition and arguably the most competitive event in the southeastern United States. This annual competition was UF's 16th installment and attracted over 1,000 high school students from as far away as North Carolina and Illinois.
HML has attended this prestigious competition for over ten years and has already participated in a separate conference earlier this school year at the University of Central Florida. Eleventh-grader Akil Cole won an honorable delegate award in his committee simulating the 59th Cabinet of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
