The Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (MTPO) Governing Board recently approved the list of 2017 Transportation Alternatives Program priority projects which includes two submitted by the Town of Miami Lakes.
The N.W. 59 Avenue project calls for the creation of sidewalks, safe pedestrian crossings, bicycle lanes, pedestrian scaled lighting, and accessible pedestrian signals from N.W. 154 Street to N.W. 167 Street. When completed, the project would provide access to public transportation and connect residents to the adjacent commercial and business centers, as well as Miami Lakes Educational Center.
The N.W. 79 Court project includes the construction of new sidewalks, high emphasis crosswalks, wayfinding signage, and bike lanes along Oak Lane/Commerce Way in Miami Lakes Business Park West. The project will enhance mobility options and transportation infrastructure for the senior population in the planned Senior Village, the business community, neighboring commercial areas, and students of the new Ana G. Mendez University South Florida campus.
The approved grants were for $1 million each and both projects further strategies adopted in the Town’s Transportation Master Plan; Greenways and Trails Master Plan; and the upcoming Complete Streets Implementation Plan, and “reclaim” these streets for pedestrians and bicyclists by using a “Complete Streets” approach, while balancing the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
