No election-day opposition for Morera, Garcia, Sanchez

The Miami Lakes Town Council will not see any changes after the deadline to file to run passed on August 5 without any challengers filing.

Vice Mayor Bryan Morera and Councilmembers Ray Garcia and Alex Sanchez retained their seats after no one filed to run against them.

This is Garcia’s second term after being first elected in 2022. Morera was elected in 2024 to serve out the rest of the former Vice Mayor Carlos Alvarez’s term after the latter stepped down in 2024. Sanchez was selected in 2024 to finish out Mayor Josh Dieguez’s term in 2024 after he was elected mayor.

When Garcia filed to run in March, he told The Miami Laker one of his main focuses was adding two additional sheriff’s deputies to the town’s force. He has been vocal about this during his time on the council and has been a huge supporter of expanding overtime for the deputies and the patrol details.

One of his biggest achievements was the expansion of the Miami Lakes K-8 Center school zone on Northwest 67th Avenue to Crooked Palm Terrace for drivers going south. He has also vowed to keep taxes low and at a recent budget meeting tried to bring the millage rate lower.

Morera, who also announced his bid in February, said in a statement was proud of his work to bring back the Senior Tax Rebate and of his work to protect residents from the effects of rock mine blasting. He also cited his work to fully fund the mowing of the town’s right-of-way and park maintenance cycles, and his work to reduce tax burdens on residents.

His goal for his term is to continue to preserve Miami Lakes’ small town feel.

Sanchez, who also launched his campaign in February, says his biggest focus will be traffic mitigation. He will continue to address the traffic at Bob Graham Education Center.

He also plans to focus on lowering taxes during his term.

All three men will be re-sworn in following the November election, and a new vice mayor will be appointed following the swearing in.
