Schedule announced for Town Council election debates

The Miami  Lakes Bar Association, the Town of Miami Lakes, and two homeowners are hosting debates for local candidates running in the upcoming general election.

The Miami Lakes Bar Association is hosting a debate for the 11 candidates who are seeking four seats up for grabs on the Town Council on November 8.

The debate is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, at Italy Today Restaurant’s Banquet Room, located at 6743 Main Street.

All candidates are invited to participate and debate the issues affecting the town. 
In addition, the Town of Miami Lakes is hosting a debate which will be moderated by former town manager and veteran county administration Merritt Stierheim at a place and time to be announced.

The debate is open to the public and will be streamed live on the town’s website.

The Celebration Point Homeowners Association is hosting a debate exclusively for its residents on Wednesday, September 14, at 6:30 p.m.

The Loch Ness Homeowners Association is also hosting a debate exclusively for its residents, Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m.

In the town election, running for mayor are incumbent Michael Pizzi, an attorney; Council member Manny Cid, co-owner of an adult daycare center; and Miami Lakes’ founding mayor Wayne Slaton, an electrical contractor.

For Seat One, Councilmember Nelson Rodriguez, a Coral Gables firefighter, faces two challengers, Xiomara Pazos, CEO and president of a non-emergency medical transportation company, and attorney Alex Dehghani. 

For Seat Two, incumbent Tony Lama, senior director of Innovations and Customer Strategy at Aspect Software, is squaring off against attorney Elizabeth Delgado.

Candidates for Seat Five, which was left opening following Cid’s decision to run for mayor, are Luis Collazo, chairman of the Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee; Esther Colon, former town manager for Lauderdale by the Sea; and criminal defense attorney Nayib Hassan.
