The Town of Miami Lakes honored the National Scleroderma Foundation at its June 16 meeting.
Mayor Josh Dieguez introduced Monica Ramirez, vice chair for the committee of the foundation’s Florida and Puerto Rico chapter and a member of the patient advisory board.
Dieguez proclaimed June 29 Scleroderma Awareness Day in Miami Lakes.
Scleroderma affects 300,000 people in the United States and causes the immune system to attack the skin and other organs.
“I want to thank you for your advocacy efforts,” Dieguez said.
Ramirez, who also suffers from the autoimmune condition, thanked the mayor and the town for the recognition.
