On September 13, eligible homeowners can leave Zoo Miami with more than something from the gift shop - they can walk out with a new tree for their yard.
Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM) will host its finalAdopt-a-Tree event of 2026 on Sunday, September 13 at the zoo. The county aims to give away 2,500 trees.
Varieties on offer will include Florida natives or trees that are considered beneficial to the area including Achacha, Crabwood, Grafted Mango, Jaboticaba, Jamaican Caper Tree, Simpson’s Stopper, Spanish Stopper, Soursop and Sugar Apple. They will be given away on a first come, first served basis, but preregistration is available at miamidade.gov/adoptatree.
Supplies are limited, so preregistration does not guarantee availability of a specific type of tree.
The event takes place between 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Owners of single-family and duplex properties in Miami-Dade County can receive up to two free trees per year through the program.
They day will also include appearances by the Miami Heat dancers and mascot Burnie, as well as free cafecito from Café La Llave, pet adoption from Miami-Dade County Animal Services and a showerheads and incandescent lightbulb swap - the county Water and Sewer Department will be giving out new, high-efficiency showerheads and up to three energy-efficient LED bulbs.
