In the early stage of the budget, the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate have agreed to provide $325,000 to fund the study of rock mine blasting effects and review the claims process for damages.

The study was a priority for Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, State Representative Manny Diaz Jr. and State Senator Rene Garcia.

The State Fire Marshall will now have the funds to conduct a comprehensive study that will allow the Legislature and State Fire Marshall the ability to make long term decisions to protect local infrastructure while keeping up with the demands of Florida’s growing economy.

Rock mine blasting has been an issue for residents of the Town of Miami Lakes.

“I am thankful for our legislators working for Miami Lakes,” said Councilmember Frank Mingo. “Our residents who are worried about blasting will get some relief after this study is completed.”

“Very proud to stand with Senator Garcia in securing this study for our residents,” said Diaz.

“After a year of ongoing dialogue with residents of northwest Miami-Dade affected by rock mine blasting, the state is taking the first step in evaluating and mitigation disruptive blasting damage in our community,” said Garcia. “I look forward to working with Rep. Diaz in implementing what the study finds.”

Funding for the study will be in Florida’s budget pending a Governor’s veto.
