Town Council recognizes public safety heroes on May 2

Government Thursday, May 18, 2017

Several community members were recognized for their accomplishments and community support at the May 2 Town Council meeting.

The Council joined by Town Police Major George Perez and Battalion Chief Abel Fernandez for Fire Station 64, honored a group of public safety heroes including Alex Acosta, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue; John Kenyan, Hialeah Fire Rescue; Sergeant Oscar Pla, Miami Dade Police Department; and Officers Kenny Torres and Carlos Ortiz of the Town’s Police Department.

On April 26, in response to a severe car crash at N.W. 67 Avenue and Miami Lakes Drive, the selfless and heroic actions of these individuals (some off-duty) at the scene were truly worthy of recognition as they provided the first assistance to all involved and their actions paved the way for the integrity of the crash scene, landing zone, and expeditious flow of traffic.

A very fitting recognition as Public Service Recognition Week is held annually the week of May 7-13. A Public Service Recognition Week proclamation was bestowed to the entire Town of Miami Lakes personnel for their outstanding service to our community.

Several students from the Bob Graham Educational Center’s (BGEC) Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Academy Savage Robots Teams, were honored for finishing 5th of the 54 teams competing in the RoboSlam VEX IQ competition at the Miami Youth Fair. The team, led by teacher Marilyn Dieppa, also qualified and competed in the VEX IQ state competition for their STEM research project – a robotic walking cane for the blind fully equipped with a GPS and obstacle detector.
