Town named a 'Healthy Weight Community' for second year in a row

Community Monday, March 13, 2017

Miami Lakes has been recognized by Healthiest Weight Florida as a 2017 State Surgeon General Healthy Weight Community for the second year in a row.

Through innovative programming for all ages, the Town is committed to making Miami Lakes the healthiest community in the nation.

Obesity is now an epidemic in the United States and in Florida, only 36 percent of adults are at a healthy weight. The health and wellness of Town residents is a top priority for the Town and has been adopted in the Town’s strategic plan.

The Town recently added 20 new programs in January bringing the recreation schedule to over 100 programs for residents of all ages and skill levels. In addition, the Farmers Market, boot camp and yoga sessions are now offered in Miami Lakes Picnic Park West every Saturday along with the monthly community bike rides.

Miami Lakes continues to pursue grant funding to implement the Greenways and Trails master plan and include Complete Street concepts.
