Two council members for the Town of Miami Lakes have a lot in common: As youngsters in Hialeah, they would drive through town and wish they could live here.
They shared their backgrounds and hopes for business development with the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 14.
“I’m basically living the dream,” said Councilman Ray Garcia, who is a health insurance agent and manager. “I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for what the Town of Miami Lakes has given to me and my family.”
Vice Mayor Tony Fernandez spoke about how his father told him the family couldn’t afford to move to town but that if he studied and worked hard, he could achieve that goal.
“Sixteen years after that, my dreams started coming true,” said Fernandez, who started an IT business.
Garcia wants to bring 1,000 high paying jobs to town, to enable residents to work where they live. Fernandez also touched on that theme of making Miami Lakes a destination for workers. A candidate for mayor in November, he also said he wants government to make business permitting and licensing “as painless as possible” and to network and collaborate with the commerce community to bring new companies to town.
The next chamber luncheon will be on March 13 at Miami Lakes Hotel on Main.
