American High’s baseball team is two wins away from its first state title after the Patriots captured the Regional 4-7A Championship last week with a 2-0 win over Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer.

American plays either Tallahassee’s Chiles or Oviedo in the state semifinal on Friday, May 16 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers.

The Patriots (24-5) will pick up where they left off last year, when they were shut out, 6-0, by Plant City Durant in the state semifinal.

Against Dwyer, Kevin Williams (2 for 3) and Rodney Williams (3 for 3) each drove in RBI singles in the second inning, and pitcher Alex Blanco (5-0) struck out four batters in five innings of work to remain undefeated.

Dwyer’s starting pitcher Tyler Ahearn yielded six hits and two scores.
