American High softball player Ashley Alfonso got her first start last month as a freshmen, showing her coach and teammates why they made the right choice when they called her up from the junior varsity team.
She pitched several solid innings and led the varsity team to a victory over Hialeah Miami Lakes.
Ashley is the latest player from the Miami Lakes Optimist Club softball program who is also playing well in high school.
She has played in the program since she was 8, and she is the starting pitcher for the Miami Lakes Heat All-Star travel team that is coached by Alex Castroman.
“We are very proud of her here at the Optimist Club and so is her mom and dad, Lorena and Avilio, who is also an assistant coach for the Heat Team,” said Castroman.
