Three Florida International University swimming and diving team members earned the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America’s (CSCAA) All-American status for their performances during the 2019-2020 season.
Sophomore Maha Gouda from Egypt and freshmen Jasmine
Nocentini from Italy and Mandy Song from
China were announced as All-Americans on April 8.
“Despite the cancellation of the NCAA
Championships, Coach Randy Horner did a remarkable job this season,” Greg Earhart, executive director of the CSCAA said in a press release.
“These three student-athletes had the rug pulled out from them this season, so we are excited to recognize them,” Earhart said.
With the recognition, Gouda -- who qualified in December to represent Egypt in the now-delayed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in the 10-meter platform event -- becomes the first FIU student-athlete in school in history to earn multiple CSCAA All-American honors.
She also earned the distinction last season, the school said.
The three selections in 2020 are the most in program history.
FIU becomes the first Conference USA team since Southern Methodist University in 2013 to have three All-American selections in a single season, according to the school.
Gouda was also the C-USA’s diver of the year, Nocentini was the co-swimmer of the year and freshman swimmer of the year in the conference, and Song was the C-USA freshman diver of the year.
“It’s not the way we wanted to end the season for these three ladies,” Horner said in a press release. “They qualified for the NCAA’s but didn’t get the chance to compete on the biggest stage. This award gives something back and is a great honor despite the circumstances.”
The honors by the CSCAA follow FIU’s sixth straight C-USA title, a new record for the Panthers.
The diving team is the first FIU program to win six consecutive league titles in any sport, it said.
