The Miami Dolphins organization has agreed to fund baseline concussion tests for 15,000 Miami-Dade public high school student-athletes during the 2017-2018 school year.
Since concussions impacted the lives of current and former NFL players, the Dolphins want to make sure high school athletes are protected from further concussions helping to fund parts of the University of Miami Countywide Care High School Program for public schools.
The testing, affecting boys and girls playing sports including football, soccer, wrestling, basketball, baseball and cheerleading, will establish a baseline brain parameters for athletes.
It gives doctors a vital tool to use as a comparison should any of the athletes sustain a concussion during their season.
The Dolphins’ sponsorship also pays for counseling, education and a workshop on concussions through a program run by the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute and KiDZ Neuroscience Center at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
