Getting the word out on health and wellness opportunities and programs available to children in the Miami Lakes community was the focus of the Fit Fair held on August 9 at Miami Lakes Picnic Park West. Many families came out on a beautiful sunny Saturday to take part in the free event.

The Town of Miami Lakes and its Youth Activities Task Force along with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr. partnered with Troop 248 Girl Scouts Chloe Schwinghammer and Emily Wong to host the event. The girls created to Fit Fair as a Girl Scout Silver Award Project to combat childhood obesity and to promote health and wellness opportunities for the youth.

“Thank you to Chloe and Emily for all of your work to bring this wonderful event to the Town of Miami Lakes,” said Mayor Wayne Slaton. “We applaud your efforts to promote the importance of health and wellness among our youth.”

At the event, local health professionals spoke to attendees on child and adolescent health while local organizations and businesses provided information on wellness and fitness opportunities in the Miami Lakes community. The Youth Activities Task Force also gave out back-to-school giveaways and promoted its own fun activities, including the Town’s Just Run Program.
