James Morgan went to the NFL Combine in late February looking to talk to interested teams.
The first one that came calling was the New York Jets.
He clearly made a good impression in that meeting.
Morgan, the former quarterback at Florida International University, is now with the Jets.
They took him in the fourth round of the NFL Draft as the 125th overall selection on April 25.
Morgan is likely to sign a four-year rookie contract that may be worth about $4 million.
“It’s a dream come true for me,” Morgan said. “I’m so excited to be a member of this organization.”
Morgan watched the draft at home with his family in Green Bay, Wis.
They might have had a feeling that he was headed to New York; they had a green Jets cap ready for him to wear as soon as the pick was announced.
The Jets were in desperate need of a backup quarterback to play behind starter Sam Darnold.
Morgan caught their eye with his on-field performance -- he threw for 5,375 yards and 40 touchdowns in two seasons at FIU after transferring in from Bowling Green.
“He is just an extremely intelligent, football smart young man who has a lot of physical tools,” Jets
General Manager Joe Douglas said, in comments published on the team’s website. “It was just a unique opportunity for us to get someone there at a very premium position to really develop and work behind Sam.”
Morgan was at FIU for two seasons and won the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award in both of those years.
The award recognizes students with an excellent combination of community service, academics and athletic performance.
Morgan volunteered with Thanksgiving meals and helped children visiting the FIU campus, the school said.
Morgan had a 3.77 GPA at FIU, it said after the fall 2019 semester.
