Albeit Barbara Goleman sophomore pitcher Natalie Costero has led her softball team to a 13-0 record, she would rather play second or third base.

In 13 games this season, Costero pitched 11 complete games, including against her team’s toughest challengers including Miami Springs and Carol City.

But she said her heart is still set on playing the bases.

“Coach Barreda asked me to pitch since I pitched for my childhood travel league team,” Costero said. “I worked hard at it all summer. But I really want to play second or third base.”

Nevertheless, the Gators are enjoying their best season, which places them in a good position to win the district championship.

With less than a month left in the regular season, Goleman head coach Orlando Barreda and his players believe they can hang on and finish the regular season undefeated.

But the Gators’ toughest test will be their upcoming district games, which would decide the No. 1 seed in the district playoffs.

Though they are undefeated, the Gators are focusing on their modest goal of winning the district championship.

Senior outfielder Jessica Costero, Natalie’s sister, said the team is humbled over its undefeated record but has more work to do to remain unblemished.

"We all worked very hard this season and I am so very proud of my teammates," said Jessica, who has committed to attend Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. "Every game we give it 110 percent and that's all we ask for. Our toughest challenges are ahead and we are ready for them."

Barreda has built a team that has played stellar ball, especially in district games.

He said his veteran players and 11 underclassman players have good chemistry and a commitment to win as a team.

He also credits his coaching staff that worked diligently to keep the team playing together.

“This peer support and teaching environment has created a sense of ownership for our experienced players,” Barreda said. “This is truly a united group of young girls and this attitude has transcended onto the field. The experienced players are another interesting combination that includes both underclassman and upperclassman.’

Sophomore players like Natalie Costero, Emily Bacallao, Denise Hernandez, Kourtney Lohn and Natalie Perez are learning from Jessica Costero and junior players Tori Martin and Michi Oliva.

Barreda said his players are not concerned about individual accolades but winning as a team.

“Several of our players have performed consistently at a high level this season and have earned impressive individual statistics,” Barreda said. “However, if you ask any of them about their individual accolades or accomplishments they will defer to their team instead.”
