The boy’s basketball teams from Hialeah Miami Lakes and Mater Academy posted the best records among local high school teams to close out 2017.
On, Tuesday, January 9, the two teams clash to kick-off the new year.
The Trojans (6-1, 6-0) have won six consecutive games and the Lions (7-2, 5-0) are on a three-game winning streak.
Meanwhile, Barbara Goleman’s boy’s basketball team ended 2017 with a 69-53 victory over Westland Hialeah, bringing the Gators’ record to 8-5, 5-2, and seeking a strong finish in the second half of the regular season in hopes of returning to the regional playoffs.
Under new head coach Phillip Jackson, the Gators have won five straight games after dropping their first game of the season against South Plantation, and won eight out of 13 games.
The Gators are led by senior center Julio Perez, who’s averaging 12.5 points, 10 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game, junior guard Randy Almonte (11 points and five steals per game), junior guard Jason Blanco (11 points and 1.4 steals) and senior guard Justin Tracey (10 points, five rebounds and two steals).
Up next for the Gators is Ronald Reagan (2-9, 1-6) when the two teams meet on Tuesday, January 9.
