Local softball teams prevail in District contests

Local high school softball and flag football teams performed well in district championship action in late April.

American High’s softball team won its eight consecutive 15-7A district championship, defeating Hialeah, 10-2, to advance to the regional playoffs.

American shutout Krop, 15-0, in the district semifinal, as Ashley Alfonso pitched a no hitter and recorded seven strikeouts.

Also, Monsignor Edward Pace’s softball team won the the 15-5A District title with a 15-1 victory over Mater Lakes Academy, and the two rivals might meet in the regional playoffs. 

Meanwhile, Barbara Goleman’s softball team lost to Miami Springs in the 15-6A District championship game but will play in the regional since the Gators are district runner-ups.

Goleman edged Hialeah Miami Lakes, 3-2, in the district semifinal, making a clean sweep over the Trojans for the season and advanced to the title game against Miami Springs. 

Goleman was led by Aaliyah Borno, Adriana Bueno, Alicia Urrutia, Kayla Morales and Megan Perez.

According to MaxPreps, the HML Trojans finished the season 10-4 and placed third in the district.

Hialeah Miami Lakes was led by Lailah Baez, Kiara Guzman, Karina London and Carmen Pardo.

For football, the Pace Spartans’ flag football team won their fifth district championship in the last seven years with a 12-0 shutout over Carol City and are headed to the regionals.
