A group of local student-athletes were honored for their stellar performances in the sports of basketball, soccer, wrestling and cheerleading, as they were named to The Miami Herald All-Dade County Teams.
For boys’ basketball, honorable mentions included American players Jonathan Vilchez, Jacob Narvaez, Brian Diaz and Myquel Noel; Mater Academy players Damarre Monsato and Matthew Tanis; Mater Lakes Academy players Giano Stringfellow, Paul Rodriguez and Alex Cuevas; and Pace players Marc Rodriguez, Dominic Shaw, Raul Paula and Shaun Stridiron.
For girls’ basketball, honorable mentions included American players Amaya Dixon and Reneshia Chisolm; Mater Academy’s Ansly Jimenez, Brianna Alexander, Annette Alicandu and Ambar Ramirez; and Pace players Gianna Donoios, Naomi Joseph, Niya Whitfield and Cheala Cumbermack.
For boys’ soccer, making the 5A-4A First Team was American’s senior defender Samir Lopez, who had six goals and five assists this past season.
Honorable mentions included Mater Academy players Issac Banegas, Juan Aguirre, Martin Garcia and Jorge Osorto.
For Wrestling, honorable mentions included Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Alexander Godinez; Mater Lakes Academy’s Omar Armengol and Nestor Nunez; and Pace’s Derrod Walker and Andrew Bradley.
All wrestlers competed in the state tournament.
For Cheerleading, making the First Team was Pace’s Lynnet Gomez (1A third place extra large non-tumbling), and her teammates, Beatriz Marino (1A third place extra large non-tumbling) and Samantha Ortega (1A third place extra large non-tumbling).
