Marlins fund scholarships for first generation college students

The Miami Marlins Foundation wrote a $30,000 check to Miami Dade College to endow scholarships for students who are the first in their families to attend college.

This year, three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students, according to the school.

The endowment will generate scholarships in perpetuity.

Miami Dade College is celebrating its 60th year. It serves 120,000 students at eight campuses and outreach centers and offers more than 300 types of degrees, career certificates and apprenticeships, the school said.

“Many of our community’s leaders have graduated from Miami Dade College, and we want for that tradition to carry on for many years to come,” said Raquel “Rocky”

Egusquiza, executive director for the Miami Marlins Foundation.

“Being first in your family to obtain a college degree is a life-changing accomplishment and has the potential to inspire others to do the same,” said Montoya, adding that the school was “thrilled” to receive the “generous gift.”
