Mater Academy and HML chess teams qualify for district meet on April 14

Mater Academy High’s chess team took home fourth place overall in the regional tournament, which qualifies the group for the district championships competition.

Timothy Oei, the team’s president, took third place overall in singles competition.

The district championship tournament will take place on Saturday, April 14 at Miami Jackson High School.

Also leading the Lions are vice president, Gerardo Rodriguez, Luis Gonzalez, Arturo Portelles, Angel Rocha, and Abel Gonzalez. 

“We are looking to compete in more competitions in the coming months as well as next year,” said the team’s chess coach Michael Mitrani. “We are currently preparing to bring home the gold on April 14th.”

Hialeah Miami Lakes High’s chess team also demonstrated a strong performance in the tournament and is headed to the district competition as well.
