Mater Academy’s football team closed out the regular season with a 42-0 victory against Hialeah Miami Lakes, as the Lions won nine straight games and headed to the playoffs against Broward’s Cooper City.
The Lions were able to hold off a late surge by Cooper City in last week’s regional quarterfinal to win 35-21.
During the last week of October, North Miami Beach High snapped American’s streak of five consecutive district titles with a 14-6 victory, as the Chargers won the 13-8A championship for the first time since 2010.
NMB’s defense stopped the Patriots inside the 10-yard line with 4:37 left in the game.
The Chargers’ defense sacked quarterback Wanya Williams on fourth down, turning the ball over on downs.
On a third down play, the Patriots sacked quarterback Wendall Morrison on the Chargers’ own 10-yard line to get the ball back and in a good field position, but a penalty was called and NMB got a fresh set of downs to end the game.
NMB hosted Coral Gables in the first round of the playoffs last week which the Cavaliers won in a running clock blowout 47-12.
American lost its quarterfinal match against a powerful passing attack by Columbus - 33-16.

In other high school football action, Monsignor Pace defeated Keys Gate 16-6, and then lost to Belen Jesuit last week in the annual Turkey Bowl
