Members of Mater Academy’s football team joined other top teams from Miami-Dade and Broward counties during the fourth annual Miami Dolphins High School Football Media Day last week at the team’s training facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.
Head coach Rocco Casullo and his players adroitly fielded questions from the media about their upcoming season.
Last season, the team won its division but fell short of reaching the state championship game.
Ranked No. 55 in the state and No. 559 in the nation, the Lions will travel to face Palm Beach Atlantic for a preseason game on Friday, August 19.
Mater Academy opens the regular season at Miramar on Friday, August 26.
Mater Academy played Columbus High in a Spring game, which ended in a 0-0 tie.
Senior cornerback Latavious Brini, senior player Lio’Undre Gallimore and sophomore linebacker Mikel Anthony Jones will lead the Lions in the 2016-2017 season, as Max Preps listed the Lions at 10 among the 25 Florida teams to win the Class 7A championship.
During Media Day, the players from Mater Academy met other teams, including St. Thomas Aquinas, which enters the season ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps, and Miami Jackson’s Bernice Brunson, Florida’s first female head coach.
