Mater Lakes varsity baseball team entered the charitable Javi Strong Tournament that was held September 29 through October 3 at St. Thomas University, Southwest High School, and Walker Park.
The tournament was organized to support the Miami-Dade County Public School principal, Javier Perez, who was hit by a car while coaching his son’s little league game.

Mater Lakes Academy defeated St. Brendan in the championship game. All proceeds from the event benefited Perez. The Mater Lakes Baseball team received rings for every player and the MVP of the tournament, Javi Cruz, received a trophy.  In addition to Mater Lakes and St. Brendan, other teams that participated in the tournament were SLAM, Baseline, South Florida Giants, and Top American Prospects. Mater Lakes went 5-0 in the tournament.

The Mater Lakes baseball team is a young team with only 5 seniors, but the younger players are ready to make a mark in the upcoming season. The team is under the direction of Cesar Temes, who has been heading the baseball program at Mater Lakes for seven seasons.

Mater Lakes Academy has a competitive athletic program for students in all grades including soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, swimming, golf, and tennis.  For more information on the school and its athletic programs, visit the school’s website at www.materlakes.org.
