Miami Laker wins prestigious junior golf award

Luke Clanton of Miami Lakes is one of this year’s recipients of the AT&T Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award

He is currently No. 4 nationally in Golfweek’s junior rankings.

Clanton was a three-time state champion at American Heritage High School in Plantation.

Clanton also reached the final round of qualifying for this year’s U.S. Open, one of golf’s four major championships.

“It is always nice to win an award for golf, but to receive the Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Award that not only looks at my golf game but also my character is truly special,” Clanton said in a press statement. “I am so honored.”

Previous winners include Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

The awards recognize junior golfers who excel at their game as well as at school and who demonstrate outstanding character and community service, the organization said.

Clanton made American Heritage’s honor roll, supported the First Tee golf program and is a member of the AJGA Leadership Links and Bible Study for Junior Golfers.

He will attend Florida State University in the fall.
