Three Miami Lakes Optimist softball players were chosen to attend the MLB/USA Softball Breakthrough Series at the USA Pride Softball Complex in Oklahoma.

Ashley Alfonso, Erika Castroman, and MeLanie Arauz were chosen from all over the U.S. to attend a five-day event with Jenny Finch and members of the USA Pride Team.

MLB funded the event, which included air fare and other all-paid expenses to allow the girls to travel to Oklahoma.

They also received cleats, backpacks and uniforms.

While there, the girls got instructions from Finch and members of the team on drills and game fundamentals, as well as playing four games.

They also were treated to the Softball Hall of Fame tour.

Hundreds of players were considered but only 60 were picked. The three girls represented Miami Lakes Optimist at the event.

The girls have been with the club since they were eight years old.

“I’ve had the privilege of coaching these girls during our recreation seasons and our travel All-Stars, Miami Lakes Optimist Heat,” said coach Alex Castroman. “They have all worked so hard year in and year out and have become extremely exceptional players and have been recognized as such by this honor they have earned. These girls stuck it out with Miami Lakes Optimist although having offers from other teams. They decided to be loyal to their home team and we are extremely proud of them.”
