Members of the Miami Lakes Optimist 12-under girls’ softball team, The Rockies, were guests of the Barry University women’s softball team on Saturday, March 28 for a pivotal conference match-up. All of the girls and their family members were treated to free admission and dinner.
Earlier in March, softball players of the Miami Lakes Optimist program, along with girls from the Miami Shores Recreation program, took part in two 3-hour clinics hosted by the Barry softball program. Youth coaches and parents were encouraged to observe, ask questions, and learn more about the fundamentals of the game.
Under the supervision of head coach Danielle Penner, the entire softball team provided one-on-one instruction in the finer points of fielding, hitting, and positioning. There was also time for pitcher and catcher training.
“These clinics are invaluable to our players. Anytime you have elite NCAA student athletes working with kids in an educational environment, it’s going to be a win-win situation. The coaches and players were very patient and that’s the key to getting the kids engaged and willing to learn,” said Ed Londono, head coach of the Miami Lakes Rockies team.
“My daughter really enjoyed herself at those clinics. I think our kids really connected with the Barry U softball players, and were excited about coming out and supporting them at the game,” said Lucy Valle, parent. “Those players are great role models for our girls.”
The Barry Buccaneers (24-7, 8-2 SSC) held on to the top spot in the Sunshine State Conference softball standings with a 1-0 shutout of 14th-ranked Rollins at Buccaneer Field that Saturday.
Alayna Gallagher drove in the only run of the game in the fifth inning. Megan Copeland, who had walked and stole second, scored the run. Haley Wiseman (11-4) twirled a three-hit shutout past the Tars (28-5, 9-4 SSC). She walked two and struck out eight in tossing her second shutout of the season.
“Our team enjoys spending time with kids and passing along some of the knowledge we’ve acquired over the years. We understand the work and commitment it takes to participate and improve in any given sport. We also stress having fun along the way, and enjoy time being with teammates,” said coach Danielle Penner.
