St. Thomas University (STU) sent four track and field runners to compete in the Critz Tybee Run Fest half marathon last month, which is a tune-up for the National Championships.
Sarah Bomkamp, Susana Gutierrez and Calyope Ortega represented the Women's Track team, while Diego Lopez represented the Men's side; all four runners placed within the top-five of their respective races.
STU's three runners placed in the top-four of a field that consisted of 108-runners from multiple programs across the country. Bomkamp paced the Bobcats, as the senior placed first overall with a time of 1:29:32, to win the Women's field.
Gutierrez was a close second to Bomkamp, finishing with a 1:30:51 and Ortega finished in fourth place, with a time of 1:33:02, as the Bobcats dominated the Women's race.
On the Men's side, Lopez finished fourth overall in a field of 135-runners, running the half-marathon in 1:13:35.
Following their impressive finishes, Bomkamp, Gutierrez and Lopez have already clinched an opportunity to compete in the NAIA National Championship meet. The National Championships will take place May 23-25 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
