Two Miami Lakes area high school baseball teams won their respective district championships last week and are heading to the regional playoffs.
The American High baseball team won a double header to claim the 16-7A championship, first beating North Miami Beach and Westland Hialeah to advance to the regional quarterfinal. The Patriots shut out the Chargers, 16-0, and took care of Westland Hialeah.
American’s game with the Chargers was scheduled for Thursday but the game was canceled due to the rain.
American, the defending state champions, will host the first round of the regional playoffs this week and play the loser of the St. Thomas Aquinas and Southeast Nova matchup.
Barbara Goleman Senior High defeated Miami Springs, 2-1, to win the district championship last week at Florida Memorial University.
Both teams advanced to the regional playoffs with Goleman facing Mater Lakes Academy this week.
Mater Lakes defeated Pace High, 1-0, in the district semifinal game last week.
In local softball action, American High advanced to the Region 4-7A semifinal game by clobbering South Broward, 12-0, and setting up showdown with defending state champion St. Thomas Aquinas.
The champs hosted American on April 28 for the right to play for the regional championship and advance to the state quarterfinal.
Against South Broward, American was declared the winner in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule, recording 14 hits and seven runs in the first two innings.
Doral clobbered Barbara Goleman’s softball team, 15-0, in the 4-6A quarterfinal, and the game was called in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.
Doral gets its rematch against Pembroke Pines Charter, a team that beat them in last year’s regional final.
Flanagan defeated Hialeah Gardens, 14-2, in the Region 4-8A quarterfinal game.
In local basketball news, Pace High point guard C.J. Fisher earned first team honors when Source Hoops/FABC released its All-State teams for Class 3A and 4A. Fisher earned the spot on the Class 4A team.
Last month, Fisher made The Miami Herald All-Dade First Team after averaging 29 points, six rebounds and five assists per game this season.
