The Child Pose, aka Balasana

The Child pose, aka Balasana, is a resting pose.

It is usually performed between sequences of yoga poses to rest the body and calm the mind, as well as reduce anxiety and fatigue. It also relieves tension in the lower back, chest, hamstring muscles and shoulders.

1.  While on all fours on a mat, bring your toes together and open your knees hip-width apart.

2.  Slowly sink back and lower your buttocks to your heels, as shown in the first photo.  If you’re having trouble getting your buttocks to reach your heels, roll up a blanket or mat and place it between the backs of your thighs and calves.

3.  Allow the torso to rest between your thighs.  You can have your arms resting alongside your body with palms facing down or extend the arms forward to deepen the pose.

4.  Another variation of Balasana is to add a small twist of the upper body, to further open the chest and shoulders.

5.  Raise your right arm toward the sky to lift your heart as you inhale, as shown in the middle photo.

6.  Then as you exhale, make a window with your left arm and stretch the right arm through it as shown in the last photo. Rest the right shoulder on the floor and gaze up.

You can hold child pose for as long as your heart desires!  Then follow the steps to open up the left side of your body.

     Rest up and keep practicing.

     Namaste.
