Zonta Club of Miami Lakes (Zonta) held its January 2018 general meeting on Saturday, January 27 at South of the Border in Miami Lakes. Traditionally the club honors the aviator Amelia Earhart, an early Zontian, at this meeting. A highlight of this annual event is awarding the club’s Amelia Earhart Scholarship to an outstanding local young woman pursuing a degree in the aerospace field.

This year’s winner of the $500 scholarship is Gabriela Gutierrez-Duran, a student at Florida International University (FIU). In addition to dean’s list honors, Gutierrez-Duran is a member of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, The Aerospace Engineering Club, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and is a NACME Scholar.

She adds to her long list of accomplishments participation in SAE Aero Design Competition 2018 and the Advanced Class Aircraft Winglet Design program.

The Zonta Amelia Earhart Scholarship program enables young women to move beyond any constraint to study and advance towards a college level degree.

Amelia Earhart Scholarship Alumnae have gone on to become astronauts, aerospace engineers, professors and university chancellors. Many have also become members of Zonta International to support Zonta’s efforts to provide educational opportunities for women and girls around the globe.

The Miami Lakes Club is a member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of executives in business and professionals working together to advance the status of women. The Zonta Club of Miami Lakes supports local charities in Miami-Dade County and Zonta International.
