Katy Sorenson closes Good Government Initiative due to lack of interest

Good Government Initiative, a non-profit which recruited people to participate in helping train new political office seekers and elected officials on ethical standards, is shutting down after a lack of interest for the program.

The organization, founded by former Miami-Dade Commissioner Katy Sorenson, conducted two debates for candidates who ran for Miami Lakes mayor and two council seats in 2013 and 2014 in the Council chambers at Town Hall.

Sorenson, who was the moderator for the two debates, said funding was not the issue for shutting down of the program, but people were too busy or no longer interested.

According to reports, the program barely covered its $350,000 budget in 2014 after posting a slight loss in 2013.

Sorenson earned $92,700 running the program, which is located at the University of Miami, and that her salary depended on donations and seminar fees for its revenue.

She praised the success of the Initiative with 86 elected official who participated saying 70 of them remain in office.
