Pace students win Jorge Luis Lopez scholarships

On Friday, September 28, five students from Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) gathered for the third annual mass and award reception to celebrate the recipients of the 2018 Jorge Luis Lopez Esquire (Esq.) Foundation Scholarship. 

The winners of this year’s scholarships were senior David Anthony Barbier Jr., freshman Alexander Cassagnol, junior Remy Fleuridor, sophomore Briana Mahotiere and freshman Shamar Wylie. 

The Jorge Luis Lopez, Esq. Foundation Scholarshipwas founded by Pace class of 1979 alumnus, attorney and philanthropist Jorge Luis Lopez and his wife Marile. Over 70 students applied for this year’s scholarship, making the selection process even more difficult for the review committee. 

All of recipients and their families were invited to attend the mass celebrated by Father Richard Vigoa. The celebration ended with a breakfast reception where the winners had an opportunity to speak with the opezes about themselves and their future aspirations beyond Pace.

Each grant of $2,000 is geared towards helping Pace students in high school with tuition assistance. Criteria for the scholarship includes a 3.0 grade point average or higher, and a written essay focused ontheir perspective on the importance of catholic education and why they deserves to be awarded the scholarship.

The application process for Pace students to apply for the 2019 Jorge Luis Lopez Esq. Family Foundation Scholarship will begin in early spring, and winners are notified at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
