Mater Lakes Academy earns Silver Rank in STEM designation

Miami-Dade County Public Schools released its STEM school designation list based on the 2016-2017 school year and Mater Lakes Academy’s high school ranked Silver in its first year of applying.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) designation is reviewed by the MDCPS’ Department of Mathematics and Science. In order to meet the criteria of receiving a designation, schools must participate in STEM competitions and professional development, and they also must meet criteria of partnerships, equity, and accountability. Schools must also have a strong science, mathematics, accelerate and career and technical offerings programs.  

For students at Mater Lakes Academy the news of being a STEM designated school has come with great excitement because of what the future holds.  

“This means we get to participate in new and improved programs,” said senior Gabby Diaz.
“We are going for Gold this school year,” said principal Rene F. Rovirosa.  “We have outstanding teachers and students and there is no doubt in my mind that this year we will increase, both in our middle and high school.”

Mater Lakes Academy has an extensive STEM program with courses in engineering and robotics, as well as innovative curriculum through Project Lead the Way in computer science and health. 

Mater Lakes Academy offers over nine Advanced Placement courses in the field of math, science, and technology, as well as several tracks to receive an industry certification through CTE programs of Health Science, Early Childhood Education, and Personal Training.
