In a quiet corner of Miami Lakes, Select Specialty Hospital long-term care facility treats patients with neurological and cardiac conditions, brain injuries; infectious diseases; kidney disorders and wounds.

The health care company hopes to increase the number of patient beds from 60 to 86, with a new, single-story 11,528 square foot addition to be built on its six-acre campus.

On its website, Select Specialty Hospital says teams led by doctors serve patients who are “facing serious medical conditions, trauma or intensive care...” and help them learn to “breathe, eat, walk, talk and think again.”

The original building has 56,106 square feet and is at 14001 NW 82nd Ave. It is in Business Park West, across Palmetto Frontage Road/Northwest 77th Court from K-9 Cove, the town dog park.

The new building will take up some of the large lawn that is also a dry retention area on the southwest side of the property.

Plans call for the parking lot to be expanded with 11 new spaces.

Joseph Okelarin, Select Medical Corporation’s director of design and construction, said in a Jan. 8 email that because the project is still in the planning stages, he was not yet able to provide the estimated cost or the date when construction may begin but hoped to share that information in the future.

The company presented its plans on Jan. 4 to a sparse crowd at Miami Lakes Library.

It appeared before the town council on Jan. 16 for a zoning hearing on conditional use and site plan approval. The council unanimously approved the expansion. Elected officials also discussed how dog park visitors were leaving their cars in the hospital lot, which they should not do. Councilman Luis Collazo said the parking issue was something the town needed to contemplate in the future.
