Nine students from Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML) participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami School to Work program. The program sent HML students once a month to Perry Ellis International's (PEI) headquarters in Doral to be paired with a mentor.
The mentors, or “bigs” teach their “littles” about the different aspects of working in a professional business environment. PEI employees volunteer from different departments such as marketing, design, IT, operations and distribution.
The program runs through the end of the school year when the students are given awards for their participation. The program also incorporates different experiences for students like team building, financial literacy and public speaking.
“Perry Ellis and Big Brothers Big Sisters do an outstanding job of providing these young men and women with a chance to experience a large international business and its day-to-day operations,” said David Ruiz, HML's Big Brothers Big Sisters sponsor.
All of this year's participants are seniors, however next year only juniors will be allowed to apply and will be paired with a “big" for the following two years.
