42nd Annual Veterans Day Parade set for Nov. 7

The Miami Lakes Veterans Parade, a 42-year tradition, is planned for Sunday, Nov. 7.

The 2020 parade was a less festive event with fewer participants.

Spectators were encouraged to distance themselves from each other, and a drone video of the march was livestreamed on the town website allowing folks to watch remotely.

Though the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us, organizers hope this year’s tribute to active and retired members of the military will be as joyful as the pre-pandemic parade in 2019.

The town will invite groups who participated that year, including school bands, beauty queens, cheerleaders and martial arts students; town committee members, elected officials and more.

An audience of more than 5,000 people is expected to line the curbs along the parade route.

Marchers will step off at 10 a.m. from Bull Run Road and Northwest 67th Avenue.

They will walk south along Northwest 67th Avenue, and when they meet Bull Run Road again, turn northeast onto Eagle Nest Terrace.

After it turns west at Main Street, the two-hour parade will end at Town Hall.

Northwest 67th Avenue between Miami Lakeway North and Miami Lakes Drive will be closed to traffic from 6 a.m. that day.

The town is accepting nominations for a grand marshal, someone who should be a veteran and who has served his or her community, too.

Sponsors are also being sought.

To obtain forms to participate, become a parade sponsor or nominate a candidate for grand marshal, go online.
