BB’s Bakehouse, the new place for breakfast, lunch, desserts or a nitecap

Four generations of a Miami Lakes family celebrated the opening of BB’s Bakehouse during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Main Street.

BB’s Bakehouse co-owners Jorge Berrios and his wife Monica Munoz welcomed guests to the light-filled cafe that is tucked between Pizza Scene and the forthcoming La Cumbancha restaurant.

Berrios, 32, is an electrical engineer who helped launch the business and designed its electrical systems while Munoz, 42, manages it.

She also designed the interior, creates the menu and bakes pastries and desserts.

They were joined by their son Lucas, aka BB, the restaurant’s namesake who will turn 4 in December.

Also there: Berrios’ grandmother Amparo Berrios, his mother Belen Rodriguez, sister Ana Berrios and Munoz’s sister Maria Munoz, the assistant manager.

Mayor Manny Cid, friends and business boosters joined in the fun on Sept. 22.

The gourmet café’s motto is Live, Love, Bake. Customers can bring a laptop and linger over an iced shaken espresso while enjoying a savory or sweet croissant.

Other best-selling temptations: Light and airy pavlovas made with almond flour; mini-Bundt cakes, baked empanadas filled with meat or cheese and bubble teas.

It could be a respite for moms on the go, or the setting for a baby shower or birthday party.

“We bake memories,” is a quote on one wall.

“For moms, it’s very difficult to find a place to enjoy with your friends,” Munoz said. “I would like to see a lot of moms here.”

The kids menu has a grilled cheese sandwich, chicken bowl or nuggets, and fruit salad.

Munoz can make pastry or cake to match any event.

Desserts are a specialty but are not listed on the menu.

“Our concept is to change it every day,” Munoz said, emphasizing that she serves fresh food.

“I like to make small portions, so every time you come you can get something new that day,” she said.

“Maybe sometimes I have beautiful strawberries, so what am I going to do?” she said. “A pavlova (baked egg whites like meringue but soft inside) with strawberries. Or maybe a Tres Leches (cake in a jar made with three different milks topped with Swiss meringue) with strawberries? I love desserts.”

Diners can select from all day breakfast and brunch items such as avocado toast, bagels, almond or chocolate croissants and French toast.

There are six paninis (even a Philly Cheesesteak), soups; Spanish toast (spread with tomato sauce); Pan de Bono (Colombian-style cheese breads); Greek and Caesar and six other salads; charcuterie boards and flatbreads.

Munoz’s display case has held her date pie, madeleines, cinnamon mini-cakes, lemon pie and glazed berry tarts.

The menu has multicultural influences “with a twist,” Munoz said. “We try to create a place with everything we like. We have some vegetarian, tabouleh, hummus, pita. We have a lot of Italian cuisine.

“Here you’re not going to find everything Latin or everything Italian,” she said. “It’s the same with my desserts. It’s more international.”

There is a beer and wine list and extensive coffee selection.

The couple met in Venezuela, where she was an orthodontist. He moved to the U.S. and fell in love with what he called the “small town vibe” of Miami Lakes.

In 2015, she came to visit, and their first date was at Pizza Scene.

“It was a cost-effective option for me at the time,” Berrios said.

“It was a very good date,” Munoz said.

They married a year later and moved to Miami Lakes. While working as a dental hygienist, Munoz took classes at Cake Art in Doral and ran a custom cake business from home.

Soon it was bye bye dental floss, hello BB’s Bakehouse.

Son Lucas was a toddler when he christened himself BB. He told his parents that they should name the business after him.

The couple says they feel embraced by neighboring restaurant owners and the people in town who showed up on opening day to support them.

“We want to contribute to the community,” Berrios said.

The family has made memories in Miami Lakes, and with their venture hope to make many more, with friends new and old, from their corner of Main Street.

     BB’s Bakehouse is at 6731 Main St. Open Mon. – Thurs., 8 a.m. – 9 p.m.; Fri.- Sat., 8 a.m. – 11 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.

There is live music performed on Friday nights.
