Carlos Andres has a few tips for parents on how to make the start of the school year safe and stress-free.
As silly as it sounds, texting and walking is a serious matter; a child in our very own town got hurt a few years ago by a truck’s mirror. Tell your children to put down their phone and look where they are walking.
Expect increased traffic in the first two weeks, especially the first two days. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Community Resource Officer Amador said additional units will be dispatched around our town with increased time at each school location to assist with traffic mitigation. PSC member and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Representative Captain Darwin Villavicencio confirmed fire engines and rescue will be at our local schools to welcome students back the first two days. Captain Villavicencio stressed the MDFR’s Stop, Drop, & Roll with a Twist initiative: “Stop” accelerating, “Drop” your speed to 15 mph, and “Roll” carefully through school zones.
The Miami-Dade School Bus Safety Program will continue to be in effect; you are required to STOP when a school bus has its red lights and stop signs flashing.
Follow your schools on social media for important updates and any changes to drop-off and dismissal procedures. Have children follow the direction of our school crossing guards and wear a helmet when riding a bike.
Most importantly, take pictures and enjoy the moment with your children.
