Elderly Affairs Committee hosts Senior Golden Hero Awards luncheon May 6

Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee will host a Senior Appreciation Golden Hero Awards luncheon at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, at the Roberto Alonso Community Center, 16500 N.W. 87 Avenue. 

The event is sponsored by The Graham Companies and Mount Sinai Medical Center.
The Town extended an opportunity for residents to nominate men and women over the age of 60 who have demonstrated exemplary service to others and the community, and are inspiring models of active aging for the Golden Hero Award.

The award recipients include: 

• Ginette Lillo, longtime instructor for the Town’s Adult Painting Class;

• Mirtha Mendez, active community member and former member of the Town’s Education Advisory Board, Elderly Affairs Committee and Charter Revision Commission; 

• Dave Oliver, vice chair of the Town’s Elderly Affairs Committee and founder of the Miami Lakes “Old Geezers” softball league;

• Akua Scott, youth mentor and adult etiquette instructor; 

• Nancy Simon, former Town councilmember and active community member; and 

• Dorothy Wix, member of the Town’s Elderly Affairs Committee and president of the Miami Lakes Garden Club.
