Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School (HML) students honored the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas school shooting on February 21. Students, faculty and staff wore orange to stand together against gun violence.
The mother of Gina Rose Montalto, one of the Parkland victims, is an alumni of HML. Students chose to honor Gina Montalto by writing her name and the names of all of the victims on the outdoor basketball courts using paint and chalk.
Student organizers chose to assemble peacefully and write their own names around the memorial during lunch instead of holding a walk-out during class. Administrators and student leaders addressed the crowd and held a moment of silence at noon.
