Local student-athletes named to All-Dade teams

A group of local student-athletes were honored for their stellar performances on the field as they made The Miami Herald All-Dade Teams in basketball, soccer, wrestling and cheerleading.
For boys’ soccer, making the 3A-1A First Team was Mater Lakes senior midfielder Miguel Quintana, while Mater Lakes sophomore midfielder Christian Tejeda earned Second Team honors for his stellar performance on the soccer field.
Third Team honors went to Mater Lakes senior midfielder Sebastian Lago, and honorable mentions included Goleman players Marvin Arias and Bryant Hernandez.
For girls’ soccer, making the 5A-4A All-Dade First Team were Mater Academy senior defender Kana Vargas and her teammate, freshmen forward Natalie Wood.
Honorable mentions included Mater Academy players Melanie Chiquillo and Daniela Ortega.
For 3A-1A soccer, Second Team members included Mater Lakes Academy junior Megan Velazquez, while Mater Lakes Academy soccer player Vanessa Rodriguez made the All-Dade Third Team,
For wrestling, earning All-Dade First Team honors were Mater Lakes Academy senior Nicholas Luna, who was the state championship in the 120 pound division, and Mater Lakes senior Omar Armengol, who finished runner-up in the state championship in the 132 pound division.
Mater Lakes senior student-athlete Nestor Nunez, who finished in fourth place at the state tournament, earned Second Team honors for his performance.
In cheerleading, Pace’s Lauren Aponte, Emely Hernandez, Isabella Leal and Maria Perinia finished as state runners-up for non-tumbling.
For boys’ basketball, making the 9A-7A All-Dade Third Team was Goleman senior guard Daniel Marin, and honorable mentions included American players Myquel Noel and Caron Wade, and Goleman players Randy Almonte, Frank Carter and Michael Tobar.
For 5A-2A basketball, Mater Lakes senior forward Cyrus Largiege made the All-Dade Second Team.
Honorable mentions included Mater Lakes players Jason Blanco, Cesar Linarez and Harley Poy; and Pace players Shemar Stewart and Alex Ulboa.
