The Pot, a timely and culturally relevant play for the community and nation, centers around the idea ‘Who Am I’? On Thanksgiving, a family comes together and are forced to reconsider notions of race, immigration, hope and the melting pot.
When Laura brings home her new boyfriend, Rick, an undocumented Mexican immigrant to her parents George, a newly elected state senator, and Mary, the pot is stirred and the heat is raised. Additionally, Laura’s adoptive brother, Nathan, has never known his biological parents or his biracial roots and must come to terms with his identity while writing a college term paper.
The Pot explores what defines, unites and separates people. The Pot was written by Glenn Hutchinson, is directed by Ivan R. Lopez, and will feature the talents of Pedro Sanon, Sofi Sassone, Clint Archambault, Melissa Ann Hubicsak, John Olivera, Clara Lyzniak, Dylan Nuñez and Michelle L. Antelo.
Following the show on certain Sundays is a talk-back with panelists from various institutions that will lead a discussion with the audience about the ramifications of immigration.
On Sunday, September 27 the panelists scheduled are Rebecca Sharpless, Esq., Clinical Director for The Immigration Clinic at The University of Miami Law School; Michelle Ortiz, Esq., Deputy Director for Americans for Immigrant Justice; and Claudio Galaz, a student activist.
Scheduled for Sunday, October 4 are Carlos Martinez, Miami-Dade County Public Defender; Maggie Arias, Immigration Attorney for Arias and Pereira; and Julio Calderon, student activist.
The last panelist discussion on Sunday, October 11 will include Carson Osberg, Esq., Staff Attorney for Americans for Immigrant Justice; Chris Brochvus, Esq., Assistant Public Defender, Padilla Unit for the Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office; and the The Pot playwright, Glenn Hutchinson.
