Miami Lakes Branch Library plans free public programs during March

Miami Lakes Branch Library announced the following programs are available for the public during March:

For Children and Families:

Reading Ready Toddler Storytime - Stories, songs and activities for toddlers and their care givers at 11 a.m. on Thursdays, March 5, 12, 19 and 26.

Saturday Matinee at the Library – The Miami Lakes branch presents a family friendly film for all ages at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 7.

Paws to Read – Certified therapy dogs listen to children read aloud which can help with reading skills at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14.

10-minute LEGO Challenge - Use imagination to complete Lego challenges. Can you design a structure in 10 minutes? Visit and library and compete. The crowd favorite will be posted on the library’s Facebook. Challenge is at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 20.

Families Acting for Safety: Protecting Your Child from Bullying – This workshop seeks to eliminate existing bullying problems and prevent the development of new bullying problems. Parents will learn key social skills to help their children from becoming victims. Program sponsored by The Parent Academy of Miami-Dade County Public Schools in partnership with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Meets at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 23.

For Teens:

Teen Club presents Teen Tech Week – Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books. For ages 12-18 and includes a Lego Time Challenge. Meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10.

Wii Geek Gaming – Compete with your friends on Super Smash Bros. 4 and fight for your own Amibo. Winners will compete at the final rounds at the Main Library at noon on Saturday, April 11. For teens 12-19 and a chance to win a $100 gift card. A Storytelling Miami event made possible by the Miami Dolphins Foundation and the Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library. Meets at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24.

Spring Break STEAM Zone "Let's Make a Video" - Join filmmaker Claudio Marcofulli and learn how to use your portable camera (iPhones, iPads, Androids, etc.) to create a short film. Space limited to 20 participants. Registration closes on Monday, March 16. Suitable for ages 13-17. A storytelling Miami event made possible by the Knight Foundation and the Miami Dolphins Foundation. Meets at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24. 

Tween Book Club – A children’s book club for ages 8-12 that meets once a month to discuss the chosen book. Meets at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28.

Teen Club - Teens meet to play video games, watch anime, draw or discuss books. For ages 12-18 at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.

For Adults: 

Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr.’s Community Outreach - An opportunity for the community to speak with the Commissioner and/or his representative from 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday, March 9. 

Book Discussion Group – This month’s selection is “Clara and Mr. Tiffany” by Susan Vreeland. Meets at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17.

Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart Outreach – A member of Rep. Diaz-Balart’s staff will visit the library to discuss federal issues or any problem a constituent may have with a federal agency from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.

Miami Lakes Branch Library is located at 6699 Windmill Gate Road and is open Monday and Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m., and Wednesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The branch is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 305-822-6520.
